Happy Saturday Everyone! I hope your weekend has started off in a very pleasant way. This blog post will be placed in my Dodie’s Corner category. Just some random thoughts, and this time a review of my now favorite place to eat, and have my favorite adult beverage, Whiskey!
The history behind whiskey and me goes back to my childhood. Sometimes parents give their children some form of sedative to help them sleep after a long day where, perhaps the children are unsettled or highly wound up, and need some help falling asleep. It could be something natural like melatonin, or Benadryl. My father’s sedative of choice was whiskey. It’s no wonder that I love it.
Friday night my long time friend and I went to eat at a place named Whisky Cake Kitchen and Bar. Link to the place is HERE If you are local to Houston, Texas or maybe driving in from the north, you really want to check it out. It’s located in The Woodlands north of central Houston.
Let’s talk about the food first. The restaurant grows it’s own herbs placed right outside their front door. I loved this idea. It’s a really nice garden and I may steal some of their ideas for my own garden. The interior has a very comfortable feel. The table we sat at had a beautiful solid wood table and each chair was it’s own unique style. They definatly didn’t match but it worked and was super cute. There’s a really nice outdoor space as well. As the evening went on they lower the lighting and light the candle at the table making this a romantic dinner location. One of my favorite features was the whiskey wall!
Now for the food! What an amazing experience this was. For starters we had fried green tomatoes. They were crunchy, juicy on the inside and a really nice thick piece of green tomato. I’ve never had a better fried green tomatoes. They came with this creamy sauce that was amazing. For our dinner meal I had the sirloin and my friend had the salmon. Now I don’t know if you are familiar with Mark Wein. He’s a food blogger and famous for his yummy face. If you want to learn more about him here is a link to an interview with him, being interviewed by one of my other favorite food bloggers You can check him out HERE. If you want to fast forward to his yummy face, to see what this looks like, you can fast forward 7 minutes into the video.
Now my sirloin was to die for but when I tasted my friend’s salmon I know I must have done my very first yummy face. I don’t think I’ve every had this kind of reaction to a piece or salmon or maybe even any other food. WOW! The outside was crisp, and the meat was so juicy and flaky. Many times salmon is over cooked but not here. I love love steak but next time I’m getting the salmon. They also have a whisky cake for desert, among other deserts, but this is where their restaurant name came from. I LOVE chocolate and never discriminate. Again I did a yummy face! There are no words. You have to try it. I forgot to take a picture because we dove right in and it was gone. You can find a picture on their website.
Now somehow I skipped over the whisky part of this place. The food was really amazing, so for me, a whisky lover, that’s saying something. I tried their happy hour Old Fashioned which consisted of Evan Williams 1783 Bourbon, simple syrup, Angostura bitters. I had them take out the simple syrup (not into sugar in my whiskey) and they were happy to do it. I also had my favorite drink the Manhattan with Blanton’s whiskey. The sheer variety available is mind blowing. The whisky wall, and other liquor, speaks for itself.
My experience at Whiskey Cake Kitchen and Bar was amazing. It’s a must if you are nearby. I would highly recommend you make a reservation though. This place is fairly new and very popular. Our seat was near a window looking out over the herb garden and the front door where we saw one couple waiting outside for an hour.
Until Next Time Eat Well and Prosper!
