I don’t know about you but I’m kind of picky when it comes to a keyboard. I’m a writer and need a something that is comfortable, ergonomic and fast. Unlike many kids my daughter’s age, my school offered a typing class and I’m so glad that I took it. My thoughts still race faster than my fingers can go but it’s a wonderful thing to be able to fly through the words.
For years at work I used the typical flat keyboards and over the years my wrist and hands started to hurt. When I started writing more the pain got worse. After trying out many keyboards I grew to love the ergonomic split keyboards and my first was the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic keyboard. I loved it so much that I had one at work and one at home. It was great for a small desk and very low profile, unlike all of those bulky keyboards out there. Unfortunately they stopped working on my laptops and then finally after a year they stopped working on on my desktops. I have no idea why. I replaced one only to have it fail in a few months. So I decided to look for something new.

Back before Covid I would head over to Fry’s, a complete geek store with everything computer you can think of, and play around with all of the keyboards to see what felt right. These days touching them is frowned upon so I searched for what seemed like a lifetime to try to find a keyboard that fit all of my requirements.

I wanted an ergonomic, split keyboard that was low profile, didn’t have the attached number pad to save desk space, keys that are spaced out so that I can feel them separately, and great reviews. Well I got 3 out of 5. Wait, why wouldn’t I try to find something that met all 5? Well I found the Logitech Ergo K860 at Best Buy that I could look at it in person and liked what I saw. The wrist rest is super soft and cushiony and the split is wider than any I’ve seen. I wasn’t sure if the larger split was a good thing yet, but I was intrigued and decided that if I didn’t like it I could drive over to Best Buy and return in. No return shipping fees if I purchased it from Amazon.
One review said that because of the deeper split than most, there is a larger than normal learning curve. This is true. It took some time for me to get used to typing on it, but after I did, my typing has never been faster. There is also a small bar at the bottom of the F and J keys so if your fingers get off track you can reposition them. I’ve had to learn to stretch my fingers out more. I think this keyboard is meant for someone with long fingers or big hands but after working on it I have no problems.
Another great feature is that you can either attach devices using a usb or you can attach it to up to three different Bluetooth devices. Even better, you can press a number button on the top right corner and you are instantly connected with that device. I have an L shaped desk with my work laptop on one side and my personal computer on the right and I can move the keyboard back and forth seamlessly.
This keyboard isn’t for everyone but I love it. I would have liked to not have a number pad on the right side, I never use it and this adds length to the keyboard. It’s also bulky, which was something that I wasn’t looking for, but after using it I love the roomy feel and you can’t find a better wrist wrest anywhere. To be fair I did like the Microsoft keyboard for a very long time, but it wasn’t reliable. As it turns out the Logitech works best for me.
Keyboards are like watches. It’s a very personal decision depending on your writing style. The Logitech is more expensive than the Microsoft keyboard but the Logitech is much more reliable. What’s your favorite keyboard? I’d love to hear.
I hope you found this post useful.
